Labor Day weekend alone is loaded — the HBCU Labor Day Classic in Jackson, a free Beat the Heat giveaway, the Sonic Boom. Then Friday-night lights, a fall fest up in Pickens, a free recycling day, and a library calendar stacked with programs for the kids.

Bey Day — Dance 2 Be Fit is back
Bootcamp’s wrapped and Dance 2 Be Fit is back on the floor for fall — Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30. The one to circle is Bey Day, September 14: one full class, nothing but Beyoncé, the kind of sweat that doesn’t feel like a workout. Come sing it as loud as you move it.

Storytime is back · 10am
Fall programming kicks off with Little Listeners “Wheels on the Bus” — songs, movement, and a story for the 0–5 crowd at the Canton Public Library, 102 Priestley St. It’s free, no sign-up needed, and it’s quietly become the grandparents’ favorite morning out. Strollers welcome; come a few minutes early for a good seat.
Canton Tigers at Terry · 7:00pm
The Tigers open the road slate down in Terry on a Thursday night — an early tune-up before district play heats up. A good one to carpool to if you don’t mind the drive, and the away crowd always travels well. Kickoff at 7; check MaxPreps for any weather moves.
Beat the Heat Jackson · 10am
Free fans, cooling towels, water, food, and cool treats for the community — Rains Park, 156 N. Flag Chapel Rd., Jackson. City-sponsored, first come first served. Worth the drive.
JSU vs. Edward Waters · home opener
Jackson State’s home opener at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson — about 25 minutes down the road. Sonic Boom included. Kickoff time TBA; check gojsutigers.com.
HBCU Labor Day Classic: Battle of the Bands · 7pm
DJ Envy of The Breakfast Club hosts the band battle at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, with gates at 4 and the show at 7. It’s the heartbeat of Labor Day weekend — drumlines, dance lines, and a whole lot of pride under the lights. Tickets at hbculabordayclassic.com; roll in early for parking.
King of the Jacktown Car, Truck & Bike Show · noon
The 8th annual car, truck & bike show at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, Jackson (front of Gate 9), same weekend as the Classic. Children 12 & under free. To enter a car, call 769-233-9229.
Dance 2 Be Fit is back · 5:30pm
Labor Day, and the dance floor’s open again with Coach LaBroski — Dance 2 Be Fit is back on the fall schedule, Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30. Come shake off the summer and get your rhythm back before the week even starts; every level’s welcome and nobody’s watching but your own good time. (The library’s closed today for the holiday.)
Senior Hour & Grandparents Day storytime · 10am
A morning made for both ends of the family — Senior Hour and a Grandparents Day storytime at the same time at the Canton Library. Bring the grandbabies, stay for the fellowship, and let the little ones burn off some energy while you catch up with neighbors. Free, and no sign-up required.
Canton Tigers HOME vs. Murrah · 7:00pm
Home under the lights against the Murrah Mustangs — the first big Friday-night crowd of the fall. Bring the whole row, a stadium cushion, and a light jacket for when the night finally cools off. Get there in time for the band and the pregame; the good parking goes fast.
Hangar Hangout · 10am–5pm
Mississippi’s premier aviation and automobile show — vintage planes and classic cars at the Commemorative Air Force hangar, Bruce Campbell Field, 7450 Old Canton Rd., Madison, about 15 minutes south. $10 general admission; veterans, active duty, and kids under 12 free (show cars enter free). A good one for the grandkids.
Hot Wheels at the Library · 4:30pm
An after-school favorite at the Canton Library for ages 6–11 — building, racing, and a little friendly competition. Space is limited and registration is required, so email Ms. Kayla at kfowler@mcls.ms to hold a spot. Free, as always.
Bey Day — Dance 2 Be Fit · 5:30pm
One full class, nothing but Beyoncé, with Coach LaBroski calling the moves — the kind of sweat that feels more like a night out than a workout. Wear something you can move in and come ready to sing it as loud as you dance it. Bring a friend; this one’s more fun packed.
Worship Wednesday · 5:30pm
Dance 2 Be Fit set entirely to worship music with Coach LaBroski — sweat and praise in the same hour. It’s a midweek reset for the body and the spirit both, and every fitness level is welcome. Come as you are and let the music carry you.
Canton Tigers at Forest Hill · 7:00pm
The Tigers head back to Jackson to take on the Forest Hill Patriots on a Thursday night — another road test as district play heats up. Worth the short trip if you’re rolling with the away crowd, and a Thursday game means the weekend’s still wide open. Kickoff at 7; confirm on MaxPreps before you leave.
Financial Literacy with BankPlus · 4:45–5:45pm
A free hour on money that could actually move something, presented by BankPlus at the Canton Library — and it’s after work on purpose. Budgeting, saving, credit, the real stuff, with no sales pitch attached. For grown folks; just show up and bring your questions.
Nissan Recycling Roundup · 9am–1pm
Clear out the garage for free — drop off old electronics, tires, and papers to shred at 300 Nissan Dr., 9am to 1pm, no charge. It’s the easy way to get rid of the stuff you’ve been meaning to haul off all summer, and everything’s handled right there. Load the trunk the night before and swing through.
JSU vs. Tuskegee · W.C. Gorden Classic
Jackson State’s back at home for the W.C. Gorden Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium — a matchup with real history behind it. Make a whole day of it and pair it with the free recycling drop-off that same morning. Kickoff TBA; confirm the time at gojsutigers.com.
Pickens Pop-Up Shop Fall Fest · 12–5pm
Live music, food trucks, and vendors at Helen’s Celebration Hall, 759 Hwy 51 N, Pickens — 15 minutes up the road. Free to get in. Want a vendor table? Call Tomeka Smart, 662-739-2802.
National Voter Registration Day
Two minutes to confirm you’re registered at your current address before the fall elections — do it now while it’s on your mind. If you’ve moved, changed your name, or just aren’t sure, this is the day to settle it. Check your status at the Mississippi Secretary of State’s site.
Canton Tigers at Holmes County Central · 7:00pm
The Tigers close out September on the road against the Holmes County Central Jaguars — district football with Friday-night stakes. A good one to travel to if you can swing it, and the away section always shows up loud. Kickoff at 7; check MaxPreps before you head out.
JSU vs. Southern · SWAC opener
Conference play tips off at home in Jackson against Southern — one of the good ones on the calendar every year. Expect a big crowd, a louder Boom, and a rivalry that always brings it. Get there early and soak in the tailgate scene before kickoff.
BINGO at the Library · 10am
The Canton Library closes the month the fun way — BINGO for the grown folks plus a “Go Team Go” storytime for the 0–5 crowd. Free, lively, and a nice excuse to get out of the house on a Wednesday morning. No sign-up needed; just come ready to holler “BINGO!”

Looking ahead
October’s already loaded. The Mississippi State Fair — the biggest event in the state — runs October 8–18 at the Fairgrounds in Jackson. Rides, livestock, funnel cakes, the whole thing. Family-friendly and easy to make a day of.
And right here at home, the Canton Flea Market Arts & Crafts Show is back for its fall run — Thursday, October 8, spread across the Historic Square. One of the biggest in the state, and the good parking goes early. (Worth confirming the date on their site as October gets closer.)

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
It hits our community harder than most — roughly 1 in 13 Black babies is born with the trait, and most people carrying it never get told. If it runs in your family and you’ve never been tested, this is your nudge. A simple blood test settles it, and it matters most before there’s a baby on the way.
Grandparents Day is Sunday, Sept 13.
If your mama or your grandmother is the one holding everybody together, this is a good week to say it out loud. Doesn’t have to cost anything — a phone call lands. (The Canton Library is marking it too, on Sept 9.)
Whatever you get into this month — a game, a class, an hour at the library with the grandbabies — do one thing that’s just for you. You spend the rest of it on everybody else.
